Overview
Hornbill Festival (usually early December near Kohima) is the headline event, but the state is worth visiting outside festival week for village stays, WWII history and hill landscapes.
Kohima and surrounding Angami villages form the classic first circuit. Dzukou Valley is a trek for those with fitness and a weather window. Mon and eastern districts are specialised, longer journeys.
ILP is required. Festival dates need early lodging — book before you lock flights.

Where to go
Grouped by region, because that is how a Nagaland trip is actually built — one or two regions at a time.
War cemetery, museums and Angami countryside.

Capital
The cultural and logistical hub for most Nagaland trips. WWII cemetery, state museum and festival grounds (Kisama) sit in this belt.

Green village
Known for community conservation and terrace agriculture. A strong half-day or overnight for travellers who want village context beyond the capital.
Seasonal flowers, ridgelines and a proper trek.

Trek
A high green valley famous for seasonal blooms and camping. Needs fitness, permits where required, and realistic weather planning.

Practical information
Fly to Dimapur, then drive to Kohima (about 2–3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions).
Dimapur is the main railhead for Nagaland access.
Highway links via Assam; private vehicles preferred for village and trek logistics.
Yes. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nagaland. Carry original photo ID. Some trek zones and districts may have additional local requirements.
Festival periods are busy — complete permits and lodging early.
There is no single honest number. Two people on the same route in the same week can pay very differently. These are the factors that actually move the price:
Homestay, mid-range hotel or premium property — the single biggest swing.
Shared vehicle vs private cab, and how much distance the route covers.
Peak spring and autumn dates cost more than the shoulder months.
Restricted-area paperwork and the vehicles allowed on those routes.
Whether meals are included or paid as you go.
More regions means more driving days and more nights.
Costs per head fall as the group grows.
Hill and border routes need experienced drivers and suitable vehicles.
Distances on a map say very little about how long a Nagaland drive actually takes.
One spare day protects the rest of the itinerary if weather or roads slow you down.
Clear mornings and clouded-over afternoons are normal across the Northeast.
Original photo ID and copies are needed for hotels, permits and check posts.
Rules and access can change — check closer to travel dates, not weeks earlier.
Villages, monasteries, churches and sacred sites all have their own etiquette.

On two wheels
Kohima approaches and village roads are scenic but demanding. Ride with daylight margins, local advice and permits sorted.
